Having come to America in 1904, he worked as a journalist on the "New York Call." He became an American citizen in 1909. After having written extensively for magazines, he turned to writing novels. His first book, the novel "Le Cinq-Mars," was published in 1911.

It won immediate success, and five more novels followed before 1930. His last novel, "Le Jour d'après," was published after his death in 1952.
